Commission: 10th European Forum on the rights of the child focuses on the protection of children in migration
November 29th and 30th, 2016, 300 experts discuss how to best protect migrant children at the European Commission’s 10th European Forum on the rights of the child, hosted by Justice Commissioner Věra Jourová. In 2015, one in four asylum applicants in the EU were minors (see figures online) and 96,000 of them arrived without parents or other carers. To better tackle this challenge, the Forum focuses on the following issues: identification and protection of children migrants, asylum procedures and procedural safeguards, and long term integration. The Forum brings together child-protection, asylum and migration professionals, as well as NGOs, to create stronger connections between all actors involved at all levels to improve the way minors are dealt with during the migration procedures. Conclusions and best practices for the protection of children in migration will be available after the event. Commissioners Věra Jourová and Dimitris Avramopoulos will deliver the opening speeches, while First Vice-President Frans Timmermans will close the Forum.
