European Commission: DG HOME hosts European Migration Liaison Officers (EMLOs)
The Directorate General for Migration and Home Affairs (DG HOME), in close cooperation with the European External Action Service (EEAS) and relevant Commission services welcomed on January 18th, 2017, the 13 European Migration Liaison Officers (EMLOs) which are being deployed to priority third countries (Egypt, Ethiopia, Jordan, Lebanon, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Serbia, Sudan, Tunisia, Turkey), and hosted an Induction Training for them in Brussels this week.
The intensive 3-day training provided the EMLOs with an overview of the geopolitical context, EU strategic policy priorities on migration, and especially the external aspects of migration, in order to equip them with all the necessary knowledge, tools and contacts to efficiently and effectively perform their tasks.
The deployment of EMLOs is a key deliverable under the Partnership Framework approach, as part of the European Union’s effort to step up coordination and maximize the impact of EU action on migration in third countries and to enhance the engagement of key countries of origin and transit on migration issues.
DG Matthias Ruete, who welcomed the EMLOs at the opening of the training said: “European Migration Liaison Officers are an excellent example of the EU moving into a joint-up approach in a time of crisis to find coordinated and comprehensive solutions.”
